why do americans think their language is american??? I had a cousin who would not belive that he was speaking english....

I thought the reverse was true, Americans think they speak English when they don't, no offence intended to them. Their dialects are further removed from proper English than the Scandinavians dialects are from each other, which are generally mutually intelligible but officially distinct languages. If your cousin doesn't understand that British English dialects and American dialects are closely related he truly is pathetically stupid and ignorant, but if Americans need subtitles for The Full Monty, Trainspotting and Brassed Off, then they should be questioning whether they do speak English.

The poor thing. His IQ level is obviously not that high. Ask him what language native Americans spoke when America was "discovered" where they speaking "American" Technically yes America is there country therefor there language is the American language, ask him is that the language he is speaking today? Watch his poor wee brain mull it over.

I have never heard someone say we were speaking American. We all, at least the relatively intelligent ones know we are speaking English.

americans speak english with a different vowel sound, there are many people who think they dont speak real english.
