I am a Licensed Veterinary Technician, in veterinary medicine we count the digits, technically called a phalanx, from the inside out in which case the thumb would be P1 and the last finger, the pinky, P5. So, yes, the thumb is considered a finger the same as the others. Outside of its external location, on an x-ray it has the same structure and attachments as each of the fingers does. I can only assume it is considered the same anatomically in humans.

By the way, in cats the claws are actually the last joint of the finger which includes the nail, in respect to humans. This is why when they are declawed the nails don't grow back. Declawing cuts off the digit at the last joint. Also, incidently, the 'foot' of a horse is actually it's middle finger.

Some people say it could be, but it's usually counted as a different digit, like saying you have 4 fingers and a thumb. Even though some peopel say they don't, cats and dogs also have a thumb, but it a few inches up thier legs. For us, it's lower on the hand, for them, it's higher on the leg.

No, there are 4 fingers, a thumb and a palm that make up a hand.

The thumb is the first digit on the hand. Some anatomists classify it as a finger while others do not. There is no hard and fast rule about and it doesn't matter anyway.
