Technically you need :
a) The Sony Vaio
b) Windows XP

However, some functions are required for the computer to work correctly, such as if it uses a touchpad, then a touchpad driver would also be required.

Most of the "excess" programs can be deleted through Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add & Remove Software.
If in doubt, check through google or on the Sony website if you can find what a certain program is for.

Like most manufacturers, Sony probably loads a lot of bloatware that you don't need. Go to www.merijn.org and download HijackThis. Run it with the "Scan and Save Logfile" option. This will give you a list of all the startup items and other stuff. You can check out each one to see what it is and whether it's necessary -- www.processlibrary.com and www.castlecops.com allow you to enter the name of an item and get information on whether it's required or optional. If you like, email me the log and I'll let you know what's what and how to remove the stuff you don't want.
