I am on the pill and i was prescribed penicillin which i took during my pill free week. i started the penicillin the day after i began my pill free week and i then came off the penicillin on the same day i started the next pack of my contraceptive pill. Do i still need to take extra precautions as i wasnt taking the two at the same time?

So they say, its up to you really, but if you want to be extra safe, I would still use extra precaution for a week or 2, just to make sure. It not going to hurt any.

When penicillin is used during contraception it CAN decrease the effectiveness of the contraceptive as most antibiotics can and will. I tend to agree with my colleague, Ann B, and although the pen and the contraception were not concurrent, there may be lingering effects of the pen. Use an additional method of contraception for the next 2 weeks.

The antibiotics affect the absorbtion of the hormones in your pill, and since you weren't taking the active tablets then it hasn't affected that during that week, however the antibiotics will stay in your system for a day or so, so the last antibiotic you took can affect the first of your active contraceptive pills, so you should still follow the seven days rule and use backup contraceptives like condoms for seven days after the last antibiotic.

Hi, Though your course of anti biotics were during your pill free week I believe extra precautions should be taken for a further week at least.
Also might I recommend that when on a course of anti biotics eat a probiotic yogurt drink daily to reduce stomach upset and the chance of developing thrush.
Hope this helps.

Probably not... the only antibiotic proven to lower the pill's effectiveness is Rifampin. Other antibiotics can alter the pill's absorption, but not necessarily decrease its effectiveness. There's not a lot of good systematic research on this topic.

Being Ms. Nellie Rather-Safe-Than-Sorry over here, I'd personally use condoms for a week (any more than that is overkill). But you probably will be just fine if you don't.

It's fine taking antibiotics when you're on the pill though you might wanna use condoms or something too cos basically the antibiotics can lower the effect of the pill, that's all.
