Its best not to find out. You will be safe for at least 6000 miles on any oil change. I don't suggest trying it, take the time to get it changed, or spend the money to have someone else do it. Its either 25 bucks on a change or a brand new engine.

A man I know did not change his oil for over a year of driving his pickup. His engine began to make awful sounds.
I asked him how many miles had he drove his pickup since the last oil change. He said @1,000 miles a month for 12 months...
The oil was so thick and gooey it did not want to drain out of the oil pan.
I am most certain the engine would have self destructed by 20,000 miles if he did not change the oil by then.
Generally speaking oil changes should be from @3,000 - 6,000 miles depending on the oil and engine service.
Does this info help any?

It depends on the engine, it's condition, and the oil you use. With synthetic oil and modern engines, people sometimes go 25,000 miles between changes. As a practical matter, going more than the car manufacturer's recommendation is not a good idea.

Depends what type of car it is some can go longer between oil changes...generally you do not want to go over 5,000 miles without getting your oil changed. I do mine every three thousand as is recommended. If you engine seizes it was be very expensive to have fixed.

I have seen a 302 ford that ran for 3 years to the tune of 55,000 miles w/o an oil change. The truck made numerous trips back and forth from Tulsa, Okla to Boulder, Co. Why anyone would not want to change oil is beyond me. You have to ask your self, " which is cheaper, oil or a new motor." This of course does not apply to the synthetic oil. I worked as a 3rd mechanic at the police garage and we put synthetic oil in 1 new car with all the documentation to verify that synthetic was in the car. and one with regular oil. At the end of 100,000 miles both cars were brought in and both engines disassembled, ALL parts were cleaned a checked for wear. The synthetic car showed .005 wear and the regular car showed .012-.021 wear. Hope this helps. Stay with synthetic oil, but you can't change to it, the rep says. Why, who knows.

It depends upon what kind of duty the engine sees. From that I mean, it depends upon how dirty the environment is where the car exists. Is it always dusty and dirty due to local construction, or not?
Is the engine a high performance engine that spends a lot of time in the upper RPM range, or vice versa?
If your engine exists in a dusty climate or sees heavy/hard use frequently, you need to change your oil more frequently.
Usually the rule of thumb is every 3,000 miles for non-synthetic oil, and every 5,000-7,500 for synthetic oil.

Mazda 6 has a odd sized oil drain plug and a different kind of oil filter than a usual car would. First you need a special sized wrench to remove the plug or you run a risk of striping the threads. if you do it will leak out all the oil. This happens frequently when a mazda6 owner takes their car to a quick lube type of place cause they have no experience with this. I assume your husband may have lacked the knowlege of this too. Its a lost cause with Mazda, they know this happens all the time if you dont bring it back to them for oil changes. Sorry.

There's no solid number for this. Every car is different in and of itself. This is further affected by how you drive it and the enviroment in which you drive it.
The question to ask is..."Is it cheaper to change my oil at least as often as recommended by the manuracturer, or is it cheaper to replace the engine because you didn't change the oil often enough?"
