So pretty much I bought the motherboard, the ram, and just hooked it up to the harddrive and everything correctly, I believe. The computer sort of turns on, the powerlight doesnt turn on and the screen doesnt display anything on it, there are no sounds out of the speakers. In fact I wouldnt even say it was on if the fan from the CPU didnt work.

It says in the manual of the MSI motherboard I have "300watt powersupply or up recommended"

My powersupply is 250watts. Im 65% sure that is the reason its not doing that but does anyone know something else it could be?

It says its recommended but that doesnt mean needed right??

Only thing, I just dont want to buy a whole new powersupply and find out that wasnt the reason, and that I bought it for no reason.

Yes buy a new power supply with at least 450 to 500 watts.

What system was this powersupply originally out of? If it was an old pentium 3 system it probably wouldn't have the additional 12volt plug required for the P4. Being a 250watt, it souds fairly old.

In any case, 250 watts is rather small. The newest chips are quite energy efficient yet the newest peripherials (video card, optical drives) certainly aren't. If the motherboard is asking for 300, than I would at least have a 300. Beyond that, it's always a good idea to have a little extra just in case you decide to add an extra hardisk or optical drive or anything you might plug in usb.

If you are building a system with a P4 or greater, then you will need at least a 500 watt power supply. If running dual core processors and SLI video cards I would look at getting a 600 watt at the minimum. Also, most modern motherboards require what is called an auxiliary power connector. More and more motherboards require this plug to cover the power needs of a Pentium 4 or an Athlon XP. The only time you won't need it is if you're operating a CPU at 1400 MHz or less. Without this, your system will not boot up. See the link for an article on building your own system.
