I have heard that when trying to define our universe, you need to use more than 3 dimensions. What for? Consider our earth: We can define space for miles and miles in all directions in only 3 dimensions. Wny then do we need other dimensions like time?

Please explain in simple language and with simple examples.

you dont consider that ticking clock on your computer another dimension? are the 3 dimensions of up, down, left, right, forward, and backwards exactly the same as 10 seconds ago? I dont think so...See, you consider more than 3 dimensions every day.

You want the 4th Dimension explained in simple terms?? Best of luck getting an answer that makes sense. Remember, this is a science fiction analogy that is trying to be proven in mathmatical terms. There ain't no easy way to explain it.

well if you can imagine an open universe shaped like a 3 torus without seeing how it would be curved in a higher dimension it would be a bit tricky to visualise.

Well, you need time to see the change in the universe. Without time, nothing progresses, and when nothing progresses, nothing happen. When nothing happen, you would be nothing. And when there's no you, there's no one to define our universe and there's no one to ask this question as well as answering it. You need time to type this question and I need time to type this answer too. So yeah, time's pretty important.
