My favorite is the Usborne Internet Linked Children's Encyclopedia. It's very good-looking, simple text, and has internet links for each section which are age-appropriate for young children. They actually have a whole series which I've been trying to buy (as I can afford) which are all internet-linked: a First Science Encyclopedia (this is excellent), a First History Encyclopedia (don't have that one yet but will soon), First Human Body, etc. A link for the Children's Encyclopedia which also has some sample pages is: http://www.usborne.com/catalogue/browse.asp?css=1&subject=R&subcat=RE&id=1091
Their First Encyclopedia series are great for ages 3 to 8 I would say, and then they have another Internet Linked series of Encyclopedias (history & science) for older children that are about 8 and over. Those are nice also, and I have some of those for my older 13 year old son.
The Usborne series are sold at any bookstore in my area at least, they are pretty popular though, so you may have to ask them to order another copy for you!

There are encyclopedia software programs that are excellent and easy to look through but if you want a hardcover (and I realise this is not an encyclopedia) take a look at DK publishing. They have books in different areas such as "animals" and "oceans" and "rain forests." I am trying to buy my grandson one a month and they are superb. The reading level would be about fifth grade, however, but many of the books have excellent photographs and can inspire interest and someone could read to him.

I loved Nancy Drew at that age. Theres also the Hardy Boys, boxcar kids. Your best bet is to go to the library and see what mystery books they have, so that you can get a good idea of age range. And that way theres a chance other kids in her group have read the book she read, rather than buying some new series that nobody has heard of yet. Let her look around the section and pick out a book that interests her and read that1

The Scholastics 2006 Encyclopedia is great.I think you can get it at any book store that stays up-to-date on new books.
