Because they are a north london team associated with the large Jewish population in the area who form a portion of their fan base. Yid is a (pejorative) term for a Jewish person.

We infact started calling ourselves Yids and Yid Army in the 80's because basically fans from teams like Chelsea, as they were known then not Chelski like today Arsenal and West Ham, would bait us Spurs fans with anti-Semitic chants due to our large Jewish following and mainly Jewish board, though i might add Arsenal also have a mainly Jewish board. So us Spurs fans in the face of this abuse decided to call ourselves Yids and chant Yid Army in the face of such abuse as we were basically saying and still do.. " wed rather be Yids than you lot !"
And by doing so we are also embracing and letting our Jewish followers and board members know that being Jewish is something to be proud of , if you are , not ashamed of by basically throwing the taunts back at opposing fans. Now of course it has become the norm for Spurs fans to chant "Yids " and "Yid Army " and i must say apart from West Ham fans i haven't heard anymore ' hissing' directed towards us. I wont explain what that means but those that still do it should be ashamed !!

what they said!

This is a wierd subject as when i first joined yahoo answers, my avatar name was YID ARMY. I never had any problems with this at all untill one day i got a very abusive message from a jewish guy, who thought i was being racist and that YID is like calling a black guy a n***a. Obviously i was very shocked by this and changed my name instantly. i then posted a question asking jewish people if they thought i was being racist by using YID. 99% of the people answered said no as quite a lot of jewish people use the term yid themselves also spurs fans use it as a chant to embrace there love for the club... The only time this term is bad is when fans of other teams use it as an insult (lots of arsenal fans my call us dirty yids) this IS racist, but what do you expect from a gooner... So if you arent a spurs fan dont use it!
I know i havnt answered your question, but everyone else did....

Tottenham is located about a mile from an area of North London called Stamford Hill. This area has a very large orthodox jew community. The word 'yid' is a derogatory term for a Jew, and assume that is how Tottenham's so called 'tag' came into being

IT's to do with their early connection with the Jewish community that lived and owned shops in that area, and I must say a nice bunch of guys. All ways VERY funny, way out humour.Still I suppose after thousands of years of persecution even Tottenham must have looked half good. As boys we used to call them "front wheel skids" they didn't mind and used to laugh with us. that was BEFORE P.C.

The correct nickname for the Tottenham Hotspur football team is the "Lilywhites". I have no idea what "yidos" are.
