I think a little of both. But let me just point out that there are stages of auditions before u get to the tv audition which means that the judges on all levels think its funny to make fun of those kinds of people, which i believe is mean in some cases

The showwouldn't be on if they were nice. Let's face it people, mean = interesting and funny, nice = boring.
A couple more points.
1. These people volunteer to go on the show. They've seen the show before and know if they go on and don't deliver, then they know that there's a good chance they'll be made fun of. If they don't wanna get ripped apart, then maybe they should avoid going on the show.
2. A lot of these people are cocky as hell yet have no talent. These people run their mouths and then fail to deliver. In my opinion, such undeserved arrogance deserves ridicule. If you're gonna talk the talk, then you'd better be able to walk the walk.
3. Simon is funny as hell.

Once again the contestant that tweens want to win wins. This is why this show sucks. If Lambert won at least everyone could say the person who deserved to win won because they had the most talent. Hell, even Kris at the end of the show said "Adam deserves this." But in the end its better for Lambert. He'll have record companies lined up at his door and involved in a bidding war, and "Idol" will get stuck with Kris singing a crappy "No boundaries" song and once again the producers will be pissed, why? Because all the tweens who voted for Kris, and all the people who voted for Kris simply because they didn't want the person who should have won win (Adam) will not end up buying Kris' album, and so Lambert will go on to make his new record company millions, and "Idol" will get stuck with Kris and "No boundaries." And next year it will happen again, which is why this is officially my last year watching this show, and it should be yours.

They were truthful. I was in the Entertainment Industry for 20 years and I can tell you that those weird ones deserve to be put in their place. So much of the "talent" was just plain bad.

The judges are only ever harsh as they know what they are talking about.
Those who cannot sing should listen to themselves before even applying, although there does need to be some kind of comedy factor to the programme still.

They were kind of harsh. In a way they're doing a service telling people not to waste their time & energy trying to sing when they suck at it! Even so, it's unfair to pass people along knowing they are horrible. Some of those people were too 'special' to make fun of.

Just mean. They do it to make fun of people and to exploit them on national television. Why do you think so many people watch it in the beginning? It's to see all the people who can't sing and laugh at them. I don't think someone would want to be in that position where everyone laughed at them on national television. That would be embarrassing.
