First, It depends where it is at. An engagement party at the couple's favorite little diner isn't the same as one at the nicest hotel. For an inbetween location, it depends on how connected you are to the couple. If you are going to be a part of the wedding you may want to dress somewhat nicer so that you represent them well to other people, however if this is the case be sure you know what the soon-to-be bride is wearing so that you aren't dressed nicer than she is. Whatever the case, Dillards.com has a lot of dresses that are day-to-evening kind of stuff so you can dress up or down depending on the occassion. You might want to consider this so that in case something changes last minute you don't have to buy a new outfit.

It depends on the dress code of the party. I was at one before christmas that said "for cocktails" and since I'm a girl, nobody thought it was weird when I called the hostess and said "omg, what are you wearing" and that gave me the dress code.

Some invites even say "summer casual" or "dressy casual" or "black tie" or even "semi-dressy".

Good luck and have fun.

Try to ask others who are going, or the couple themselves that are having the party what the dress code is. I went to a rehearsal dinner thinking I could wear nice pants and a fancy top - everyone showed up in fancy dresses so it is always best to ask! What could it hurt? You will be prepared! Have fun!

Engagement parties are of celebration, do wear something dressed up but not fancy. Something like a skirt, nice blouse, and some heels. If a male then some slacks and a collar shirt.

Well, it depends entirely on what sort of party it is. If you got a formal invitation, it should have told you what kind of dress.is appropriate. WHERE the party is being held should give you a clue.
If it's at a banquet facility, or fancy restaurant, dress accordingly. If it's at someone's home, inquire of the hostess what to wear.

I would wear a nice dark dress depending on if its like a cocktail party or an outdoor sunny party. Just dress for sheer comfort. And keep it iCute.

it depends on the venue. look at the invitation. but if you want to be safe, just wear a nice dress -- something fun; that can walk through the day into the evening.

I guess it depends where the party is being held.
I wouldn't get extremely dressed up, but I wouldn't go ultra casual. I wouldn't wear jeans.
