It could be a number of things. Patellar subluxation, meniscus tear, IT band snapping. The patellar subluxation could be something that you can go ahead and start playing again depending on pain and swelling, just realize that if it happened once it is more likely to happen again. If it was meniscus (cartilage inside your knee)then it may require you go to an orthopedic doctor to determine if you need surgery. To determine this is if it continues to be painful and it swells or you feel constant clicking and/or locking then I would say go. If it is IT band issues some ice and anti-inflammatories will suffice. There are other things it could be but if it isn't getting better in 3 to 5 days or it gets worse before then go in. Hope this helps, hate to see a fellow rugger not playing.

A pop in the knee spells trouble sooner or later. Likely sooner. It usually means a torn cartilege or worse.
The good news is that with arthroscopic surgery, you're in and out the same day and back at it in 2 to 3 weeks.
NO! Do NOT suck it up! I did that and 9 surgeries and many scars later at the age of 44 I can still remember hearing that "pop" that has me suffering with severe arthritis today. I no longer have any medial cartilege left and half the lateral is gone. The ligaments and tendons are atrophying and I'm about 5 years from total replacement.
Oh, and surgery number 10 is coming up soon.
So, what ya gonna do?

Anybody in the medical profession will tell you that an audible popping can be cause for serious problems. My advice: suck it up for a few days and REALLY practice RICE techniques. Rest (no rugby practice), ice for 30 minutes on-1 hour off, ACE bandage for compression, and elevate above your heart when doing this. If it still shows signs of severe to moderate swelling, increasing pain, or weakness then you need to see a doctor. From one rugger to another, good luck.

go to the doctor just to be safe. It may be nothing but if it is something you could end up not being able to have full use of your knee and maybe not even play rugby anymore! If you want to play more rugby i would say go to the doctor so you can be sure you wont hurt it worse.
Good luck!

You should go see a doctor and if it is nothing, what does it hurt? If it is in fact an injury you will have spared yourself more pain and maybe even a worse injury - don't play again until you go in - try to see a sports doctor - most of the time you don't need a referral from your family doctor.

I think it would be a good idea to see a doctor as soon as possible. Even if the bone popped back into place you could have a stress fracture or just sore muscle. Any way you put it go see a doctor.

Go see a doctor or a sports trainer right away. Delay in diagnosis of an injury can make that injury worse.

You might want to go to the doctor now so you can play rugby longer.
Good luck!
