My daughter is performing in a talent competition and I am looking for an instrumental or karaoke CD without backgroud vocals. So far everything I have found has the vocals. The specific track I am looking for is "I Love You" by Martina McBride. I ordered a karaoke CD with backup and it sounds like crap.

If the original song has background vocals then so will all karaoke versions of the song. Since ALL karaoke backing tracks are created by studio musicians, the quality will differ from discs to disc. You may have purchased an inferior version.
