I don't know if "fear" is the right word. Certainly we should be wary.
They are growing very powerful economically, and their military strength is advancing.
The US is not used to having any serious competitors who are both economic and military powers. It almost certainly make things more difficult for us in the future as we try to shape the world as we think it ought to be.

My answer is don't fear China - fear WAR with China. China houses a third of the world's people, and the land is so vast - even if (a big if) our weapons are superior, and we used nuclear weapons, we might not win. If China ever decided to wield it's power we'd be in trouble if we were on the other side. From a personal standpoint, I don't fear China- almost everything I know about China I like. Their rich culture, food, okay the strict government isn't so great but really America is turning into a socialist state anymore so the differences in thought are getting fewer all the time. On the naive wistful side I wish we could form a solid partnership with China for the benefit of both our countries. Their human capital and our technology -there's nothing we couldn't accomplish as a team. Such wasted potential. :(

Because it is HUGE, it is POWERFUL, and regardless of whether the people of China really feel this way or not: it is run by an authoritarian regime with the openly declared goal of conquering the world by force in order to ensure its version of economic justice.
Lots of Americans want to conquer the world, too, don't get me wrong. People who are afraid of us have a right to be, because we certainly can be bastards in our own way.
Bbut at least we aren't monopartisan and don't openly profess to adhere to any coherent economic ideology, let alone one that involves world domination.

We don't. Only a few pathetic people who are scared of everything anyway.
China is not a threat to the US--nor will they ever be--and that inccludes in economic terms.

I wouldn't say we fear them, but they do have a huge number of people, and they own a lot of our debt.
