The mechanic says it's the intake gasket and should be replaced or the engine will blow. I asked another mechanic and he says b/c it is cold here, that is just a build up of condensation. He advised me to take the van for long runs instead of short ones. This may remove the sludge build up. What am I to do? Keep driving and hope nothing happens or replace the gasket? Does anyone know how much the cost will be?

If you fill you radiator with antifreeze and its to full mark when it cold, and watch it for a couple weeks to see if it drops. If it doesn't you don't have a intake gasket problem go to a better oil Mobile 1 or something that guarantees no sludge.

There are NO oil passages in the intake manifold.
So, replacing the gasket will not benefit you what so ever!

I would just replace the gaskets... it should be no more than just a regular maintence thing. $100-$200.
