When I left UPS in 2004, starting hourly pay was circa $15, meaning that for a person without advanced education, it's a nice rate of pay. Union members get slightly better wages and more authorized overtime, but some of the drivers I knew who were full time drivers (I was relief) earned $50K/year with overtime and holiday pay, etc.
To become a driver at UPS, you have to work your way up in the organization. So, you spend a few years loading/unloading boxes and then put your name on a list and when you've been there long enough they give you a spot. It's hard work, long hours, and you may miss out on some family activities working from 8AM to 9PM, but there is a definite need for that type of worker. If you're earning more than driver starting pay when you become a driver, you get to keep your wage as a driver even if it's higher.

hello. One of our friends workd for UPS and he told us that he makes about $25.00 to start as a driver but it is very hard to get on he has been with UPS for about 10+ years and just now got a route. Now if you work int he warehouse you obviously don't make that much but Yes I believe that you can support a family by working at UPS. GOOD LUCK!

UPS and FED EX are actually going to merger into a single company. It will be called Fed Up and all of the workers will be disgruntaled post office workers.
