The year after 1 BC is 1 AD (no year zero). So you add the two numbers and subtract one. 350 + 40 = 390 - 1 = 389. Thus 389 years apart.

It's been along time since school but... I believe it is 390 years. 40 BC is 40 years until you get to AD and 350AD is 350 years since the beginning of AD. 40 years + 350 years = 390 Years
After reviewing the other answers I was wrong ... It is 389 years because you have to substract 1 from 390. I told you it's been awhile! LOL!

389 is the correct answer. Think of it as a scale in math with 40 years to the left of the zero and 350 years to the right of the zero. Then, since the year 0 didn't exist, we can drop that digit out of the scale and go from -1 to +1 without the zero in between. That gives us 390 minus one or 389.

BC is commonly referred to as 'Before Christ' and AD 'After Death' it's set up so that you sort of count down to Christ's birth so instead of 41BC being after 40 BC it's opposite. 41 BC then 40 BC then 39 BC til you get to 1 BC in which case you go to 1 AD. After 1 AD the years add up as they do now with 2 following 1, etc. So the addition is 40 -1= 39 then 39+350= 389 years.

They are 390 years apart. BC beans Before Christ. AD means Anno Domini - the year that Christ was born. So you add the years before that point (40) to the years after that point (350). 40+350= 390

Edit: I think the poster before me is right. I forgot to subtract the one year, the year of the actual birth. The answer is 389.
