Using an old hot tub, or, if you only want a small one, a bath tub is a great idea. Recycling anything is great for us all. But you can go one step farther with that tub like I did.
Plug up all holes(overflow and such) except the drain. Use a proper plug for the drain with a chain attached to the top of the tub. Run a drain pipe from the tub drain to a ditch or somewheres the water won't cause a problem. This way, when you need to clean the pond out good, just pull the plug and let it drain out.
I made a pond this way for my turtle for the summer. We dug a hole, set the tub down flush with the ground and ran the drain pipe under the ground to the ditch near by. We then used flat rocks to border the edges of the tub and even made a waterfall going into the tub. Add a pond filter and fountain. Plant a few nice plants around and you have a beautiful inexpensive pond that will last for years with little maintenance.

You could go to a local Wal-Mart or such store and buy a kit which would include a thick plastic sheet and perhaps a pump, etc. Otherwise, you can dig a hole the size you want your pond, buy some thick plastic, lay it in the hole but keep the plastic above the pond level. Put heavy rocks around the top of the plastic to prevent it from sliding back in and draining the water. You can use heavy rocks or a more decorative concrete edging blocks/bricks. Fill with water and you have the beginning of a garden pond. You'll probably need a pump to generate oxygen for fish if you plan on putting them in there... otherwise, use pond lillies... Be forewarned, however, that the water will evaporate so put it within garden hose range!

The cheap way to do it is look in the paper and see if anyone is giving away a small or big hot tub all you need is the shell and you can plug the water shoots witha plug the hot tub shell is best because the roots from trees and such dont go throug it as with the pond liners you have to be sure you pack it really good with paper or a flexible shell then put a preform pond or a liner pond but the other way is to take landscape lumber cut it to the way you want it and nail it toghter and then put pond liner this way you can make it deep or shallow without digging a hole.

You can have it done professionally for approximately $1000-2000 depending on the size. Or what I would suggest, renting a back hoe or maybe a excavator. You can recieve free training at a Lowe's or a Home Depot.
