I am so glad you asked this question b/c many years ago as a child I remember seeing these beautiful ants and have seen them no more since. I have wondered about them and if I had dreamed them up as a child. But, the website www.uky.edu/Ag/Entomology/entfacts/pdfs/entf/442.pdf had alot on them and even a picture. It seems that the female are all wingless and the males have wings. The colors are a variation of red, yellow, orange. The female is mostly red with black. She seeks out the bumblebee nests and lays her eggs inside the wax cups. I really would like to see some of these again! They are sometimes referredto as cowkillers. Not the bovine variety, but probably the bumblebee is the cow. I'm guessing.

As with many organisms, they are rare in some
places and common in others. Also there are
many different kinds of velvet ants and some are
commoner than others. I have seen them fairly
commonly in the western panhandle of Florida.
Their comparative rarity is probably in part because
of their peculiar habits and life cycle. The large one that is commonly called the cow-killer because
of the severity of its sting is a fairly uncommon one, I rarely see more than two or three a year.

I have found several in the southern portion of the central valley in california and in the mojave desert, They come in Red, Yellow, Orange, and White. They are actually wasps not ants so you do not see them in groups they are individualistic except in mating season. They are most common in California, Nevada, Utah, and south through Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and into Mexico.
Be careful the females have a very painful sting.

They are out-competed in most habitats by ants and beetles. These days, they'd be prey to the non-native Argentine ants.
I've seen them up in the San Gabriel mountains (I am in Southern California).

We have them all over the place in Oklahoma when it is warm. The ants are pretty hard to kill when you step on them. Are you wanting a dead one or a live one?
