"Long" division is simply the method of dividing one number by another when the solution isn't obvious, and writing down all the steps to prevent confusion and error. If the dividend is not an integer multiple of the divisor, the process can continue into decimals. Odd divisors other than 5 yield repeating decimals.

Long hand division is where you do it in steps on paper, as opposed to using a calculator or computer, or doing it in your head.

e.g. 50 divided by 10 is 5 and can be done in the head. However, 169 divided by 13 is not usually done in the head, but rather on paper. That being said 169/13 equals 13.
