what is the difference between anime and cartoons?

Anime is Japanese animation usually based off of Manga (Japanese Comics). While Cartoons (US) are not usually based off of a comic.
But to be as clear as possible Anime is anime because it has distict features, ie colorful, big eyed characters, etc. While Cartoons (US) the characteristics depend on the company/show.

Lets just say anime is more advance and cartoon is just simple drawing. Cartoons are just for kidds and Anime is for teenagers like games, they have kiddish games like super mario 64, Yeah! ^_^

cartoons are innocent animated shows 4 little kids

anime is more erotic and violent. The animation is more sharp and detailed. that's what I think!

anime are animated series vased in mangas(japanisse magasine series), created in japan.
cartoons are not mangas nor created in japan
