I'm writing a research paper regarding advertisments....i chose a videogame advertisment...i also use text within the videogame...

Citing software is very similar to citing a book. It has either an author or publishing company (or both). Cite the software name, the copyright date, and instead of pages, give a brief description of how the retrieved information can be reviewed.

It is a perfectly proper source if, for example, you are writing an essay about popular culture.
I've never had to do this but I'd probably tell a student to cite the name of the game (in italics) and the copyright information. But I'd be glad to hear from a professional editor if one of the big names (APA, U of Chicago Press) have made a ruling on this.
