Kyra, you ARE so lucky that he could live THAT long. I had 6 hamster in the past, non of them lived longer than 18 months. Their lifespans are so short, so I believe you have done the best you can. When I had my hamster, I took them out every evening to play with them too.

many people don't take their hampsters to the vet, but you are, apparently, a caring and devoted pet owner. i think, tho you may find it a waste of money, that bringing your pet to the vet may be beneficial. You can also try a few of these tips. For more in-depth information, just visit the site at the bottom.
~be careful if you have a cold or the flu, as hamsters can catch them from human
~make sure his teeth or nails don't get too long
~when holding trex, make sure to check for lumps in his body
these are just a few tips. keep up the great work, its clear your hamster is loved.

the best thing to do is to stress him as little as possible. don't wake him in the day. give him all his fave treats. broccoli, apple, carrot--can shred them if he's having trouble eating. give him some plain, unflavored yogurt on a baby spoon. 2 1/2 - 3 is the typical age they die if well cared for so sounds like you've been doing the right things. make sure he has plenty of carefresh or a similar type bedding. if like mine, his bed is upstairs and he has moved downstairs---bring the bedding down for him. don't clean the whole cage, especially his bed---just the pee corners.

as little stress as possible will make his life easier. i know u want to hold him but do so as little as possible and only when he's awake. u can talk softly to him and hand feed him to be close to him.

I've had many hamsters over the years and none ever lived 2-1/2 years -- you have done a fine job of taking care of your little critter! He is lucky to have lived such a long life. I suggest you make him a nice, cozy bed with lots of cedar shavings, and make sure he's comfortable.

i"m sorry about your little man. 2 1/2 is very old for a hamster. Perhaps you should thing about taking him to the vet to see if there is anything that can be done to make his quality of life better.
