Wearing a tampon can increase the risk of contracting TSS, but are there any other illnesses, conditions or allergies that make you more likely to get TSS than another woman who also wears tampons?

I realize that tampons can increase the risk of contracting TSS. I know that TSS is not just caused by tampons and men can get it too. I'm not asking for an alternative to tampons.

I want to know if it's been reported somewhere whether something else can contribute to the risk of TSS. Are you more likely to get it if you have a urinary tract infection? What if a family member has had it?

Wearing a tampon for EXTENDED periods of time (i.e., more than 7-8 hours) is what exposes people to the risk of TSS. Many studies have conclusively proven that it is PERFECTLY safe to use a tampon overnight. Also using a tampon that is larger than your flow requires will increase the possibility.

As for pre-existing conditions, I would imagine that anything that impairs your immune system (lupus or AIDS, for example), might leave your body more susceptible to the disease.

Just an FYI, TSS is NOT a period-only disease. People -- men and women alike, young AND old -- can contract TSS from something so insignificant as a cut or scratch.

Using "jumbo" or "super" tampons increases the risk. Use a cup instead.
The diva, moon or keeper cup...or "instead"
