I am due in March, and need insurance for my baby. I am on my fathers insurance. We were going to put the baby on my boyfriends insurance, but his company won't give it to him till about a month after she's already born. How do I get insurance for my daughter. I don't want to have to go through the government. Is there another way to get it?

I don't work. My father cannot add the baby, his insurance won't allow it.

The father of my daughter will not get insurance until a month after she is born, that is when we will put her on it, as soon as he gets it.

You can get a short term policy that will be effective from the day she's born until 30, 60 or 90 days (whichever you choose). I had one for my son because we ran into the same problem. We got ours from Blue Cross/Blue Shield (you can get it on line actually). It costed us about $120 for the 30 days then after that your boyfriends policy should kick in.

If the baby's father has insurance, then generally the baby will be covered by his insurance for about a month automatically. He needs to look at the provisions of his insurance, or check with his personnel department to get information if he no longer has the papers regarding his coverage. If he has an insurance card, he should be able to contact the number on it to determine exactly when she's covered.

If you're under your dad and he doesn't want to add the baby, there's not much you can do except government assistance. Since it's only a month, why not give it a try since it's better than paying hundreds of dollars for each appointment..and the baby will need to be checked up on within the time frame of that one month. Even if you were to get your own insurance through a job, that takes up to 3 months before you're approved. You could always bring this up with a local pediatrician's office (esp. the one your daughter will be seeing) and see what they suggest. Good luck!

You can apply for state assistance for medical care for the child - your state's health plan. Most states (that i know of) accept newborns & pregnant women with little or no fee at all - that could be a great help for you until you get the insurance switched over.

Yeah the bureacracy is a little annoying, and some people have a stigma about gov't medical assistance - but for a month or two it might really help you save some $ and get your baby some good care.

For the first 30 days, baby is automatically covered by the mother's insurance

I've had 2 babies under 2 different insurances. With both of them the baby was covered up to 6 weeks. After that they had to have their own insurance. Which for us meant we had to provide our ins. comp. with their birth certificate and that was it. She needs to check with medicare or some other program in her county/state. WIC would be a good place for info, or the county health department. Best of luck.

I would say the baby is covered under your insurance. That is what happened to my daughter before we put her on. She was automatically covered under me.
