Good question. I'll try to answer it for you. While a cold front is the border between cold air behind and relatively warmer air ahead of the front and the cold air is replacing the warmer air, a warm front is the border between the warmer air to the south and colder air to the north. In this case the colder air is retreating and being replaced by the warm air. These two kinds of fronts, cold and warm generally coexist due to a wave of low pressure along the front. With the air circulating counterclockwise about the low the cold front would be the leading edge of the northerly winds about the low and behind the front and the warm front would be the leading edge of the southerly winds in the warm air to the south of the front. I hope this helps you understand these two fronts a little better.
