Ask your doctor if they a VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean) supportive. They may not be, some hospitals have banned this, for a few reasons-none of which are very good! Then get these books:

The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth by Henci Goer

The VBAC Companion by Diana Korte

Silent Knife (author: I can't remember)

Many ignorant people will tell you that the risk of uterine rupture is higher for woman in that instance (even and most likely to tell you that is your doctor/OB) But the number & stats show that there are far fewer risks involved with a vaginal birth than a cesarean section... Go to http://www.ican-online.org/ to learn more about your options. You do have the right to not have surgury!!!

I have had one c-section & do not want another if at all possible!!! Do your homework & stand your ground! My hospital banned VBAC, so I am searching for a supportive midwife/dr.,in my area, that will help me!

Some doctors or hospitals still do not allow VBACs, it also depends on the direction the doctor cut the uterus open during the original c-sections (only way to know is to ask, can't tell just from external cut).

Okay, I went back and reread question after reading other people's answers I thought the question was about natural after c-section.

Yes, you can opt for a c-section without a medically necessary reason. Every person heals differently, it does not always take "months and months" as some people would try to scare you with. I stayed in the hopsital just 2 days with each of my c-sections (1 less than normal) and took only ibuprofin for pain once I got home. After about a week I was getting around pretty well. You will have weight lifting restrictions for first 6 weeks (10 lbs.). My insision is very very low (hidden in my pubic hair) so no one would ever know if I decided to wear a bikini to the beach.

If your friend has already had 2 C-sections, it is very unlikely that her doctor will even allow her to attempt a vaginal delivery, or VBAC. (Vaginal Birth After Cesarian)

Currently, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology recommends that women who have previously had a C-section can be allowed to have the VBAC. However, most insurance companies won't cover it unless the baby is born at a teaching facility.

The reason is, there is a small chance that the surgical scar can tear, which will cause severe bleeding. At a teaching hospital, they have surgical wards ready, and if that happens, it is a good learning experience. At a regular hospital, the insurance companies won't allow it due to the added liability.

Some women that wish to have a VBAC have to opt for a midwife and to have the baby at home, or wait until the last moment to be taken to the hospital, so there isn't time for a C.

So, her doctor can allow a VBAC, but may not have a choice to do so. Having another C shouldn't be any problem at all.

I would not elect a c-section. I had to have one because it was an emergency and I was in pain for so long and there was a complication from the c-section that affected me two weeks after. C-Sections can make your lower stomach harder to firm up after you have had your child and you can't workout for a while after a c-section. The state I am in also requires that if you have one c-section you have to another... which I think is just wrong. I won't have another child in this state because of that.

Yes

Having a C section happens because of complications that prevent having the baby naturally - if requested and Dr's feel it is NOT medically needed chances are your Insurance will not cover it or you will have to pay out of pocket for requesting the procedure - but you can definitely request it, but you will have the scar and a bill, and a longer recovery time.

I am sure it is up to the doctor. I don't believe you can just insist on a C section if your labor is going ok. In fact, it may even be unethical. Csections are going down because Drs were doing unnecessary ones. Why in the world would someone CHOOSE a section over vaginal birth if they COULD delivar vaginally?

some doctors will and some won't, it just depends. it also depends on your insurance as some won't pay for a c-section if there isn't a medical reason for it. i don't advise c/s. i have also had 2, not by choice, and it seems like it takes so much longer to heal than to have it natural. also if you have a scheduled c/s,you still have to have the same meds as if you were having the baby naturally, so why go through all the extra healing time?

You're not "required" to have a c-section just because you had one in the past. It would be STRONGLY advised if she has a up and down cut on your uterus as the chance of rupture of the old scars are higher. If her uterus is cut side to side, then the chance of rupture is less than 1%.

However, if you have no medical need for a c-section, most respectable doctors wouldn't give you one. There's no reason to put a woman thru the trauma of surgery if it's not necessary.

Depends on the doctor ...sometimes yes it's true you can choose...i have had birth both ways and let me tell you the c-section was way worse it took a lot longer to get up and around and feel like my self again, but with natural child birth i was up walking around the hospital the same night i gave birth.
