How about places that suppress open elections, opposition media and opposition political parties?

I say this in repsonse to the idea that we're supposed to tread lightly on other countries' customs yet are supposed to believe they are still "good places" in spite of oppression.

Ok, here's the point. Certain posters bash the US on a number of points and claim countries with the problems listed above as "good places". I think that's a load of bunko. So I pose the question to debunk the idea that such countries are Ok. They aren't.

"good places" I hope so since it looks like the coarse we are heading.... Shutting up Washington watchdogs is already on the Democrats agenda with their wanting to reinstate the Fairness Doctrine (which will quiet talk radio and political talk TV shows), tax the Internet, and control bloggers(the UN agrees with the last two),Hey are the Democrats messing with our first amendment rights ?? Is Matt Lauer addressing this issue???? Why are they controlling the cameras in Congress and the Senate- nobody else did.... Makes me wonder what they are doing to the opposing political party,(of course having a liberal media helps!) I've noticed a lot of Republicans agreeing with ideas that they have always opposed... Hmm mm ... Open elections , sooner or later when the socialist agenda is implemented will get that too.. Not possible , really.... Wasn't Venezuela a Democratic society until Chavez was elected by the people in a free election.. well, he has since made it illegal to openly criticize his government and he decides what is on the news (sound like the fairness doctrine huh..) so seemingly open elections are not really so open..

closed societies will always have to open up to the world or risk being strangled in a dead economy...once they open up however, it is hard for their dictators, gov'ts to keep the flow of info from entering their country...this eventually will either forv=ce them to open up further , or close the country more, in which case the govt will become less stable and revolution of some sort will begin...watch cuba in the next few years as castro either loses some of his power or dies..i predict the cubans will either go to communism all the way, since china is already putting in a lot of engineers and tech people..or the population will want a reconciliation with america and the west for their economic future...going to be an interesting situation..ala the cuban blockade of the 60's maybe...

Most people don't care about what they suppress, as long as they don't suppress what they want. It's called selective memory. And as far as that goes, it's pretty much means to an end. I doubt too many countries really like each other or the way each other treats their people.

well, before I cast stones at other countries, I look to look at my own...and we have plenty of treading on religion here in the US, as well as suppressed elections (2000) opposition media (labeled 'leftist') and political parties (until November, we had no opposition to the president). I am wary to answer this question, or think that those same things don't happen right here, by our own president

its not that they are good places if just you cant go around policing the world. There isnt a single country in the world with the man power or money to police the entire world not that the rest of the world would allow it anyway.

If you lived in a country that's not as free as the US, like say China, you might like it. Until you live here and experience our freedom, you won't know the difference. Hypothetically it is possible for another country to exist with more freedom than here, would you like that more? Or would you stay here?
