i'm new to knitting and was looking at a pattern and it said to use "stitch markers"....i read that you could use safety pins as markers....i'm wondering if you could use wineglass markers for stitch markers?? (i have a bunch of them that i bought as a gift that i never ended up giving)

wineglass markers could work as long as they don't fall off the needles while your knitting. I know some wineglass markers have an open end to slip around the stem of the wine glass and that may slip off the needles if you aren't careful. But my stitch markers look like wineglass markers only with a smaller circle to go around the needles.

I should think so. I often use a bit of wool in a contrasting colour. Though I have just got some free stitch markers with this months Simply Knitting magazine, can't wait to use them. As long as the wineglass markers don't snagg the wool they'll be fine.

If you don't have store bought stitch markers, the best thing to use is some round and something can be easily slipped from one needle to another. The plastic rings that come off of a 20 oz or 2 liter soda can be used, milk carton rings, I have even use garbage bag ties just make sure they are round and that they are securely tighten to make a circle. I am going to make my own by using beads, and a round hook. I hope these suggestions help and happy knitting.

What a great idea! Just make sure that there's no wayward bits of wire on the wineglass markers that could snag your knitting.

There are plenty of companies too that make decorative stitch markers out of wire and beads. I like the plastic ones just fine, although I usually just use a loop of yarn with a knot. It's lightweight and it doesn't matter if I lose one, because it didn't cost anything and I can make another.

Yes, as they are in theory stitch markers first.

you can use pretty much anything as long as it will hold your place. I usually use a piece of waste yarn and tie it off where it's supposed to go. I would assume that the wine glass markers would work just fine as well, as long as they are not heavy and bulky. Small ponytail holders work great as well!
