I've never heard of this practice before but it would be cool to have that extra power boosting capability to start an engine. If it didn't pose a hazard of course.

No--even if you had it on low dc--it would be too much voltage. too great of chance to cause a spark and eat the battery. what teeth you have left will only be numbed by the battery acid in your eyes--don't try it
