something to think about... the largest corporation in the U.S.(our government).. lives a lavish lifestyle with petty cash funds, luxury cars, $1000 suits and a salary on top of that. the government makes sure that they have plenty of room to live in and the finest of schools for their young to attend. they also make sure the best medical coverage and treatment is available when needed.

on the other hand, the military, a subsequent piece of the government, cannot provide single soldiers with the living space that they supposed to have.. there is not much on any post for a soldier to do in the form of entertainment. there are no petty cash funds, only cash loans, which in turn wreck their credit causing them to spend even more money in interest fees when they do want to have something.. if they have a family, they have to rely for the mostpart on regular public schooling wherever they may be stationed at that time... and yes the government is paying the miltary a little better now but it is still not good enough for men and women in uniform who put their lives on the line every day.

just a double standard in my opinion; and i think a good point of for your debate

A corporation does have similar responsibilities to society. They must live up to whatever commitments they have made and not break any laws.

However, a corporation also must earn a profit. If they don't, then they will go out of business leaving their stockholders and employees poorer.

Your value to the "common good" is your choice. You can simply slide through life doing as little as possible, or decide to try to make the world they way you want it to be.

How do you improve the quality of life? You do that by giving everyone an equal opportunity to succeed. It means hiring the best person for the job regardless of their skin color, religion, sex, etc. Requiring quotas specifically defeats this goal.

It is up to each individual to improve their life. If you aren't willing to learn new skills, take on new responsibilities, and make yourself a better employee, then you don't deserve a better quality of life.

If one kid in college studies and takes harder courses in order to be a more marketable employee, should they have to give a portion of their grades and credits to another kid who chooses to party every night and maintain grades that are just enough to get by?

Redistribution of wealth makes no more sense than redistribution of grades or anything else that is EARNED.

I agree with the principle of your statement. In other words, Enron Corp is guilty of stealing. Microsoft is guilty of conspiracy ( against competitors) and intimidation. So on and so forth. Unfortunately people automatically show respect for someone wearing a nice suit and who is articulate as though this equates to higher morals so they (as heads of corporations) get away with bribery, extortion, and robbery on a massive scale. I know that this is not true of all corporations, but it is true of some.
