Don't do it - they look cool and sexy when you're young and fresh and so are they - but they look crap when you're old and tired and so are they.

1) The small, hot girl tattoo, often on the small of the back. This says, "I'm trying to freak out Mom:"
2) The white Trash/ Shitkicker tatoo. Often a spider web on the elbow, or a big skull or something. Possibly a cartoon character. Says "I've probably spent time in prison and have only a 5th grade education." The hot girl above, may, if feeling resentful towards her mother, bring this guy home in hopes of giving her parents a cardiac arrest.
3) The urban hipster tattoo. Often self-designed, arty or ironic. Most likely purchased out of boredom. This person may also be wearing a stupid hat.

No matter what kind you get, make sure you want it. I wait about 6 months before you do it to make sure that is the one you want. Don't go to a tattoo shop and pick one out of their books, think of something that speaks to you. If you want one, just take your time and make sure you want it.
Above all don't listen to the people who say that its stupid or wrong to get a tat. They are narrow minded people and don't understand the idea of body art or body beautification. These are the same people who want you to be just like them, and are afraid that you have a mind set that is different from them.
Don't do a tat on the small of your back. That's called a tramp stamp

Harmful ones; very harmful ones; then awful ones.
Seriously, you have the "classical": boats, broken hearts, roses of Jericho, broken arrows, etc. Would be useful to read "Until I find you" by John Irving ; it's a very good novel and after that you'll know everything about tattoos and tattooers.
