The further north you are, the better off you are to see the norther lights. If you mean America as in North America you could include northern Canada as a place to see the northern lights as well as Alaska.

The farther north you are the more frequently you'll see them. However, under exceptional circumstances (major solar storms) the Northern Lights can be seen as far south as Virginia.

Alaska is your best bet. Occasionally you could see them in northern states in the lower 48.

The best place is Alaska, they can also be seen in the northwest (Northern Idaho, Washington, Montana, etc.)

you can see it sometimes in Colorado, especially if you go high into the mountains. around 10,000 feet.
