I agree with what others have said about not living with your best friend. Ending up hating her is a definite possibility. Even if you know that you and your best friend would never ever hate each other I still would not suggest rooming with her. It is much better if each of you get a different roomate. In college your going to want to make a lot of new friends. If you and your best friend both have a new roomate, thats 4 people who can all hang out together. And your roomates may have friends on campus as well, so even more friends. It's a better way to get yourself plugged into the social pipeline. It may feel safe to stick with your best friend but a new roomie would be great for making more friends. And if even if you can't stand your roomate it will give you great encouragement to get out more and experience college life.

Do not room with your friend... You will hate her within a month. Rooming with a stranger can suck (I had to get a room change last semester due to abuse from my roommate), but you can get a room change. One of my friends told me about a good plan: Room with someone you remotely know. Someone you know enough to be able to have civil conversations with, but someone who you don't know well enough that if you end up hating them it will be a big loss.
Also, if I were you, I would just request a single room. It's less hassle in the long run.

Go with the friend. This is the conservative choice. You will get someone that you can deal with. By getting randomly assigned a roommate you might get a great roommate, but you might get a horrible roommate. Depending on your school's housing policy and the availability of housing, the possibility of changing roommates is not a sure bet.

You and your best friend will hate each other in a week. Better to go with the stranger and still have someone to complain about her to. All my best roommates were the random ones. I had roommates from Korea, India, France, and China - it was great!

Don't request your best friend. Libing together usually isn't as fun as people think it will be. You two may end up hating each other before the semester is out.

Personally, I would just pay a little more and not have a roomate at all.

If you don't prequest, then you and your room mate will most likely find somebody on campus that you like and switch. That is what happened to me. I thought it worked out well. It was about a two week process.

definitely request if you can - my first year was hell because of my horrible roommate, it's not worth the risk.
