Turn Off 'System Restore' as that will be using a lot of HD space
Start >> Control Panel >> System >> System Restore >>

With such a small amount of space to work with, DEFRAGMENT will not work
What you have to do:
delete some files, the bigger the better
I cannot decide for you which to delete, but you need to free up about 25-30% of the drive so that you can defragment
If you cannot delete files, the leave the HD as it is

If you have cleaned and deleted all that you can, try defragging in safe mode:
Restart your laptop in 'Safe Mode' by tapping the F8 key during boot-up (don't hold the F8 key down continuously, but keep tapping and releasing), choose Safe Mode from options given. See if you can now run defrag.
I use ccleaner (crap cleaner) rather than the computer's own clean up utility: http://www.ccleaner.com/ When using ccleaner for the first time, back up any important files to a disc. Set a restore point and then run ccleaner.

Use DIsk Cleanup utility which can be found at Start-->Programmes---> Accessories---> System Tools-->Disk Cleanup. It will delete all the idle files on ur computer and u will be surprised by the disk space u have freed from it :D
Otherwise better still remove all the idle files such as mp3/videos on ur computer/laptop to some other computer/laptop using a CD/DVD Rom or a USB to connect between them...

Before you delete files you care about, delete the junk files.
Specifically,
Go to My Computer, right click you D: drive, select properties, and push the "Disk Cleanup" button on the General tab next to the pie chart.
Then go to control panel, select Internet Options, and select Delete Files under Temporary Internet files.
And finally right click your Recycle Bin and select Empty. See if this free up enough space.

If you have only 1% of free space on your Hard Drive, your computer is not going to work!
You must decide which programs/files you no longer need, and delete them!
The only other thing you can do, is have another Hard Disc installed that will run along side your existing Hard drive.
Incidentally why are you referring to your hard drive as D drive?
When it should by default be C?
Is your Hard Drive partitioned?(divided into two sections?)

You may have to defrag your C: drive, or you allocate more space from your Cdrive to the Ddrive. You could also compress some of your files into zip files. Your computer should ask if you want to do any of these things. Good Luck. I am not really good at this kind of stuff either.

You should buy an external hard drive and read the instructions carefully .Your hard disk is full so leave it alone or you will lose everything .Then ask a mate who is computer savvy to help you clean up your hard disk . Dont fart around with it yerself it,ll only be tears
