They use a company called Nielsen Rating Company...a/k/a The Nielsen Ratings. This company installs boxes on people's TV's that monitor their TV watching habits. The people are chosen as a cross section of the American population. The boxes compute how much time they watch TV, what shows they watch and other relevant information, which the TV company's use to sell & price their advertisements for sponsors.

The setup boxes sometimes report the channel being watched and the guesstimate the viewers from that. Also, it depends on the ad as tv networks get paid by advertisers, so they can also know that by how many people call or whatever. I think?

They don't. They have boxes in a certain number of homes that monitor viewing & then take a guestimate at the whole viewing public watching the same.

They have thousands of people who have boxes on their TV's telling the companies what is being watched and they extrapolate the viewing figures of their test audience over the country.
