When I first bought my laptop I could get 2.5 - 3 hours of battery life. Here in the last few weeks I have noticed it has slowly decreased to the point where it only lasts about an hour and a half. Any ideas on why or what has caused this

Battery manufacuters state that the number of times a battery can be recharged is finite ... 400 to 500 times depending up the battery. Batteries wear out with time and usage. Dell states that you will notice a decrease in battery run time after 18 to 24 months. If you don't use the laptop for days at a time, then unplug it from the outlet, as over time this will reduce the life of the battery. You might trying buying a used one on ebay, as I have seen excellent deals there or buy a new one from www.priorityelectronics.com (seem to have some of the better deals).

all rechargeable batteries have one thumb rule : Never charge beyond limits. Which means that, a rechargeable battery is new and gives very good lasting hours of use when recharged, it should not be plugged in to the power plug point beyond the charge limit. Once your battery is charged you should unplug it immediately and let the battery run down and then recharge it.
But most often, users prefer to leave the batteries plugged beyond the full charge point. This decreases battery life. That is what happened to your battery. The only solution is to replace the battery or use electrical power.

Rechargeable batteries degrade as they are used.
A) Try freezing the battery in a plastic bag. That can restore some life (odd i know). Remember to let it comeback upto room temp for a couple of hours to avoid condensation problems.
B) Buy a new battery

I have heard leaving the battery in all the time is not good for it because it will be being constantly charged....

Do not recharge to soon.

Your battery needs replacement soon.

What u can do is wrap a battery in a towel put it into a plastic bag...
Make sure no air can get inside. Put it inside freezer for over a night. Don't expect miracles but the battery should work better again. Enjoy.

The battery may be worn or more likely it may have developed a memory. This occurs when the battery is recharged before it is totally discharged. Let your computer run for several hours until the battery is totally and completely discharged. Recharge it and see what happens.

The laptop battery is made of "cells", each linked together to provide you with the total amount energy to power your laptop for X hours. If one or more of the cells begin to fail, your total amount of hours of usage drops considerably.

You will need to check with the laptop brand and purchase a replacement battery or find a battery that are designed/authorized to replace your current battery.

This started happening to my Gateway. If you had the lap top in under a year just call your Manufacture and tell them they should send you a new one.
