Find a common denominator for each and it's easy...

3/7 and 3/5 common denom is 35 so..
3/7 = 15/35
3/5 = 21/35

So 3/5 is greater

1/4 and 2/8 common denom is 8 so..
1/4 = 2/8
2/8 = 2/8

So they are Equals

5/9 and 4/6 common denom is 18 so..
5/9 = 10/18
4/6 = 12/18

So 4/6 is greater

3/7 < 3/5. If the fractions have the same numerator, the greater is the one with smaller denominator.

1/4 = 2/8. They are equivalent fractions: multiplying both numerator and denominator by the same number does not alter the fraction's value.

5/9 < 4/6. To see it, subtract one from another:

5/9 - 4/6 = ((5*6) - (4*9)) / (9*6) = (30 - 36)/54 = -6/54 = -1/9.

Since the result was negative, 5/9 < 4/6. Other way to see it is realizing that 4/6 = 2/3 = 6/9 (equivalent fractions). It's obvious, then, that 5/9 < 6/9.

The shortcut to comparing two fractions is to "cross multiply"
3 / 7 __ 3 / 5
On the left write 15 (3 x 5)
On the right write 21 (7 x 3)
If 15 < 21 then 3 / 7 < 3 / 5

1 / 4 = 2 / 8
because
1 x 8 = 4 x 2

5 / 9 < 4 / 6
because
5 x 6 < 9 x 4

The other answer about common denominators is correct.
But this is a good shortcut to check your work
(or on tests when you are rushed for time).

In fractions if the denominater (the bottom number) is smaller then its bigger unless (like number 2) When the largest denometer is double the other one and same wwith the numerator. if the bigger one is double the smaller one then its equal.
