If iam using a cable modem, that has been provided by my ISP, to connect to the internet, am i in danger of my privacy rathen than using a router with my cable modem on the side?

Yes. Hooking directly to cable modem allows others to view your computer.

It is best to have a hardware firewall such as a router, and additionally firewall software running.

U System I Ok,Most People Use Cable Only To Connect to Internet.

Most new modems have built in firewalls....however, I would recommend at the least, that you install a good firewall program, as well as a good virus software program.
I would however recommend a router that is capable of WEP security.

Install a firewall on your computer. The free security offered by most ISPs isn't very good. It'll keep out the beginners, but for a skilled hacker it may as well be a welcome mat. Make sure you get antivirus software and keep it up to date too.
