I've read Stephen King and I prefer his early work to his recent work but if I have to choose between King and Koontz, I'm going to side with Koontz. I've read over 50 of Koontz's novels and I've loved every single one of them. His message is always positive at the end, unlike King who seems to be a perpetual pessimist. Koontz also brings in some of the most disturbed and horrifying antagonists I've ever come across in a story. King tends to make his characters swear a lot and have disturbing habits like sexual dysfunction in order to show how bad his characters are. I just prefer Koontz's characters to King's. My favorite Koontz novel is Watchers but there are some which have come close to taking that spot. The runner ups are By the Light of the Moon and Odd Thomas.
