You need to provide more information. Is the engine not slowing? Is the transmission not shifting down? Please clarify your problem.

Honestly to say, I am not a specialist in transmissions. I have a VW Turbo Diesel with manual transmission and the only thing which refers your question is the tendency of a diesel engine to keep r.p.m. in certain levels (I can even drive without pressing gas pedal at all).

I think that your problem is caused by the inability of automatic transmission to detect r.p.m. Please contact some service for automatic transmission.

By the way: we have very few (<<1%, trucks excluded) cars with automatic transmission here in Northern Europe. I guess that the main reason is a certain freight of higher gasoline consumption and the need to master all your gears during winter season (a lot of snow is coming at last!). I myself have driven AT cars which are very nice and easy during summertime but still prefer manual boxes.

Sounds like a transmission problem.

What's a gare? Oh, GEAR.

Check your accelerator pedal linkage. Might be hung up under the hood. Maybe a cat or rat died on the engine.
