By law, the seller of a house is obligated to disclose all information about the house to the potential buyer, such as defects, but also including deaths. One would like to think that the seller of your house did abide by the law and that, if you weren't told about anything, then nothing happened, but people lie about this all the time. Check with the police if you're worried. If you find out that something did happen, you can contact the realtor who sold you the house and ask them why full disclosure was not made. They and the prior owner can be held legally liable for this.

You can check police reports at the main station, and most areas require that suicides and homocides be reported on the seller's report, but you need to ask your realtor about this as it varies from one locale to another. As far as other bad things, ask your potential new neighbors.

you could ask for a "full" disclosure, of the history, of the previous owners etc.
