I've been working on my room for a while. In Sept. My Dad and I went in and painted my room. Since then, We've been buying things to go with the new theme. Now that it's January, my parents are wondering why I'm not sleeping in my room. And to be honest, my room is so much of a STY that I can't get to my bed, none the less open my door. I need some serious help to get my room clean. I have horrible cleaning skills, and I need assistance. I'm too embarrassed to have my parents see my room, that I have to lie to get them off the topic! So how can I get my room clean?? Please help me...

Begin the de-cluttering process slowly. Start with a drawer or a shelf. Take each item out, asking yourself the following series of questions:
Does this add value to my life?
When was the last time I used it?
Do I have duplicates of this item?
Does it need to be repaired? Is it worth repairing?
Could someone else use it, or is it junk?
If I am going to keep it, does it belong here?

As you go through this process in a room have handy a number of boxes labeled with the following:
Donations/Giveaway
Consignment (Lots of money can be made from your old junk.)
Repair
Doesn't belong here
Trash
Undecided

Immediately after you have finished, take the repair and donation boxes out to the car and be sure to place them in the front seat, not the trunk where they could languish for quite some time.

Decluttering is an ongoing process, so make it easier by following the "In and Out" rule. Each time you bring in something new, force yourself to get rid of something old.

I tell my son to take it in sections. If you look at your whole room, you get overwhelmed and then nothing gets accomplished. If you say, ok I'm going to do just this area today it will be more manageable. Also try to get rid of things that create clutter. Ask yourself, have I used this in the last 6 months? Try a keep, toss, and maybe pile. Good Luck!

Wow!

Okay, it sounds like you simply have too much stuff in your room. You need to decide what you want to keep and what you don't.

Once you've got the clutter cleared (a challenge- I'm a packrat too!), start learning several habits:
1)Take dirty clothes straight to the hamper.
2)Make your bed immediately when you wake up: That way you can't forget.
3)When you're done using something, put it back in its place.

If you haven't already, you might even consider getting shelves to help store things.

Good luck!

Sounds like one of the theme-based purchases you need to buy are some sturdy bookshelves. Get a dozen or so lined wicker baskets and you can create your own customizable storage shelves. Clothes, toys, sentimental knick-knacks can each have their own basket. Oh, bookcases also hold your books ;)
