Work is an energy transfer resulting in a change of the energy stored in a system. If a positive force is applied t o a system, energy is added. If negative, energy is subtracted from a system.
Remember that energy is never created or destroyed

when work is done, the energy states of different systems may change but work is the transfer, not the changing energy itself
