Tom-foolery was a generic term for jesters. in medieval england. it means fooling around because of this.

Playful or foolish behviour. Probably came about due to some one named Tom that was fooling around, then one or more people started calling what he was doing "Tomfoolery" and the term spread.

The term implies mindlessly ridiculous silly fun without a thought as to if it lands you in a pile of stinky nor hot water ... just question this the next time .... can you get yourself out of whatever your tomfollery got you into unscathed? LOL
