Speed, reliability, and how long they last are basically equal on both. My recommendation is that if you want an external hard drive, buy and external hard drive, not the enclosure + internal. The reason is that I have seen countless reviews of external enclosures listing problems getting them to work correctly. So while it would be equally effective, why risk having problems getting it to work.

Yaar there is nothing difference in the performace if the specification of the hard drive used is same. In my opinion enclosure is a better option. Infact the external hard drives are just modified enclosures. There is an enclosure from Antect which supports both IDE and SATA drive. It may cost around 25$ so go for it. Well if the life is concerned then laptop hard drive with 2.5" enclosure is a much better option because you do not need a bulky adapter and also it is much resistant to shocks.

In reality? Both last just as long. In my opinion, the external enclosure is the better of the two. Why? Because you can swap out the hard drives. if you get a 3.5" enclosure (so you can accomodate any hard drive) you can still use it just like an external hard drive except that an external hard drive you can't really take out the HD inside and put in a new one. So if you run out of storage space, thems the breaks kid. Just get an enclosure and buy a hard drive.

If you want flexibility, buy the enclosure and the drive and put them together yourself. However, if you want support, warranty and backup software to go with it, you may prefer to buy one of the retail products.
As to the difference between the two, there really isn't any, other than cosmetic.
One thing that I have discovered is that if you get a cheap enclosure, you might end up with a flaky enclosure. I suggest getting a good brand like MacAlly. I run a data recovery lab and have several MacAlly enclosures around here. Any other enclosure I have is unreliable and have ended up on a shelf.

in case you unfolded an exterior stressfulcontinual, you may discover that anyone which is is an inner stressfulcontinual encased in an enclosure. This bowled over me the 1st time i found out too. in actuality, the two are comparable in only about each way. the only conceivable difference could be that the exterior stressfulcontinual is greater of a sealed unit and probably not made for consistently beginning and shutting.
