Well 1st I could care less about this point system I'm just here to help. So I don't care if I get best answers or not. Putting that aside... Macintosh is always the best bet. You can go cheaper and get a PC but you'll be fitting viruses etc, constantly. I have 3 PCs and 1 Mac. PCs always have problems. Mac has never had problems. This is especially important if you're a student. You could lose valuable documents you need to pass classes, etc. So PCs although are cheaper just are worth the risk. Kind of like trying to get to the moon with a rocket but you have to sit on the outside. Just is not smart money. But if cheap is what you need look at the new minis $300 to $400 gets the job done. Just hope you never lose important information. Get the best virus protection you can find. Don't rely on Microsoft. They put out software before the bugs are taken care of. Good luck little one. Now go and be like sunshine.

My biggest recommendation for a laptop would be to get one with a processor designed specifically for mobile computers.
These include Pentium-M and Centrino. Regular Pentiums at high speeds tend to overheat.

Do you want to use it for gaming or not?
I would suggest you look for reviews on the Internet, or forums where people discuss problems.
Have a look here for suggestions: http://www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/alist/
Those are "A-listed" computer stuff according to the PC-Professional magazine, and they do pretty in depth testing.
