What is bacterial vaginosis (BV)?
Bacterial vaginosis, also called BV is the most common vaginal infection in women of childbearing age. It happens when the normal balance of bacteria in the vagina is disrupted and replaced by an overgrowth of certain bacteria. The vagina normally contains mostly “good” bacteria, and fewer “harmful” bacteria. BV develops when there is an increase in “harmful” bacteria and fewer “good” bacteria.
What causes BV?
The cause of BV is not understood. It can develop when something, like sexual contact, disrupts the balance between the good bacteria that protect the vagina from infection and the harmful bacteria that don't. It is not clear what role sexual activity plays in the development of BV, but BV is more common among women who have had vaginal sex. But BV is not always from sexual contact. We do know that certain things can upset the normal balance of bacteria in the vagina and put you more at risk for BV:

I had repeated bv infections while pregnant with my 2nd child. I did have a full term pregnancy and he was delivered without complications. He is 5 now and perfectly healthy since birth. I have had the same problem during this pregnancy. I have had bv 3 times so far and I am almost 28 weeks. For some reason i am more prone to the infection while pregnant. My ob has told me to make sure to keep a close eye out for any symptoms so that I can be tested and treated asap.

I had vaginitis a lot before and after i was pregnant. Take all of the medicine as prescribed. If you are having a fever, consult with your doctor. To help keep balanaced, eat yogurt regualrly. I started eating yogurt 2-3 times a week and my problems lessened. They have some really great tasting options and yogurt is cheap. usually about 50 cents per container. I usually buy about 2 dollar worth a week. try yoplait or the ones with oreos in it.

All I know is that you better take all of what they prescribed you, I am not trying to freak you out but BV is one of the leading causes for second trimester miscarriage. I am glad that you are getting treatment tho, and since you have caught this early, I am sure that you will be fine, after all if there was something to worry over, I am sure your doctor would have told you. Congrats on your pregnancy!

Had this with my third one. As long as they keep it treated you should be fine. She was born at 36.5 weeks but was not low weight. I had to have antibiotics during labor so she would not get it when she came through the birth canal. But she ended up with a little thrush anyway but that was also treated and cleared up very quickly.

As long as they treat it and you take all your meds for it you should not have to worry. The only thing diffrent during delievery for me was that they had to give me antibioctics in my IV so it would not pass to my son. He was born full term and full weight. If you still have any concerns though I would recamend talking to your doc

Relax. You're being treated for the situation. It can lead to those things if this goes untreated for a long period of time.
