I am planning on buying a used aquariums - dimensions are, 4 FT long, 1 FT deep, 16 Inches tall. How big is this tank? The guy labels it at 55 gallons, but i'm almost positive it isn't. AND, he has a fluval 302 filter with it, is this an internal filter ( put inside the tank) or is it an external filter ( underneat or outside ) and is this the right size for this tank size, thanks.

You are right it is only a 40 gallon tank. I'm not that familiar with that brand filter but I'm pretty sure its a external filter.

Looking at the pic I found, it's an internal filter and should provide a decent filter for the size tank you are looking at.

I have a tank and filter all by Fluval, and they are pretty good. I would make sure though that you have a supply of filter replacements. The one's I've got are not Fluval originals and it can show, especially after a 1/3 or 1/2 tank clean out.

I would just ensure you have a supply of replacement filters before you get the Fluval 302 filter, or preferably buy a new one from a pet store if possible.

Its a 40 Long. The fluvals are good filters, depending on how old it is. If its a canister filter they are better. Make sure you try it, if its been sitting the rubber housing inside can dry out and leak like crazy. Also might want to see the tank with water in it.
I sell used tanks for $1/gallon. For the tank, hood, and filter if in good condition, Id give the guy $80-$100. You can reseal a fish tank with aquarium cement, but medications get into the silicone, as well as them drying up over the years. If he is asking alot of money for it, consider checking petco or even walmart, they have a 55 complete tank set up.

Check out this site for everything you need to know about sizes of aquariums. With regard to the Fluval 302, I had a difficult time finding any information on it other than one person's comment that theirs was 15 years old. Mostly what I found referenced was Fluval 304, and I'm not saying that that would be the correct size for your tank. Also, there are different types of filters and pumps that you need depending on whether it's saltwater or freshwater or goldfish. So, since you need to get your water cycling anyway before you add fish, I would suggest using that time to looking into getting a new filter.

It computes to 40 gallons.
Maybe he goofed on measuring. All-glass doesnt make a tank with that measurement. I dont know about perfecto since their site is down, nor oceanic. It could be a geriatric tank tho.
But all glass's 55 is 4 ft by 1 ft by 21 inches. The 33 gallon is 4 ft by 1 ft by 13 inches.
Doesnt really matter since once you put in stone and decorations, the water is going to be displaced and wont be the exact gallons anyways.
Im not sure about the fluval 302, according to hagen's site its discontinued so its probably old. Im familiar with the fluval cannister filters, those are really good. It probably would be better to upgrade and get a new filter anyways. I use the hang on the backs personally but i like the design of the cannisters because u can hide it under the tank cabinet. Dont ever use a undergravel filter those suck.

No that's 40 gallons, not 55. 55 gallons is 3 feet long, 1.5 feet deep and 1.5 feet tall (usually).

The fluval 302 will be adequate filtration, in fact it's perfect for that tank. It's an external canister filter. You could add an AquaClear 50 HOB (waterfall) filter to oxygenate the water, though.

the tank may not be 55, but i think its very close(around 50) and u have an internal filter thats sposed to be adequate for that amount of water. i have never used internal filters(except on my powerhead) so i dont know, but you might look into replacing that, since you dont know how old it is. or at least adding another to help out(depending on what type of fish you are putting int the tank. anything messy should have another filter) if you compare the demensions of a normal all glass 55 it is pretty close, but not quite equal.

Its a 40 gallon tank (39.8)

To find the volume of a tank in gallons multiply the dimensions in inches (length x width x height) and then divide by 231:

length x width x height
-----------------------------
231

I think the external fluval 302 will work just fine...

Good luck!
