You can find out for yourself...go to this website and try out the 14 day free trial...The link for the free trial is on the right hand side, a bit down the page.
www.worldofwarcraft.com
If you decide that you like it, it costs anywhere from $19.99-$39.99 for the original game, and about $49.99 for the new Burning Crusade expansion set. There is a monthly fee of $14.99 USD for unlimited playtime, but you can pay for three or six months at a time and save a bit of coin.
That being said, I've played for about a year and a half, and I love it...it's a great way to relax on your days off, and to meet fun people that share the same interests. I met one player that I constantly run quests with because he is so much fun to hang with!
So try it out first, see if you like it. Don't waste your money just to try something out!

Yes and No. WoW took elements from several different MMO's and polished them into a well written game. WoW is a very simple game. Easy to play, easy to understand. Very little complexity, and most people can play it. It's popularity is due to how easy the game is to play.
The software does what it intended to do very well. However, I find the actual intent of the game is significantly flawed. Reality breakers abound, which make it unsuitable as an RPG. PvE is geared towards solo play, which contradicts the purpose of an MMO. And 'Ganking' is the norm for PvP play. The ganking is so ramped, that ganksters can prevent you from leveling past 30 when all the leveling areas are also PvP areas.
So it's not for real role players. It's not for people who enjoy group MMO play. And unless you started in Beta and always have the highest level Toon with the best equipment, then PvP is unplayable.
The game is suited for kids who enjoy that type of gankfest. Adults should move along ... nothing much to see there.

If your looking for a MMORPG with a large community and you don't mind shelling out $15 a month, It's an ok game. It really isn't THAT good in my opinion. If money is a problem, try www.runescape.com or buy guild wars. Guild wars is WOW but no monthly fee and had more to do.

Is it a good game?
Is it good in that it has socially redeeming and educational qualities. no.
Is it a good game in that it is fun?
Oh, yea. I bought it in 2005 leveled 2 characters to 60 and then relized how much time i was spending on line, so i quit.
But if you have some free time and like role playing games, it is great. (side note, making friends and getting in a good guild will increase your enjoyability exponetially)
